Happy Chinese New Year
新年快乐!新年快樂!
The Chinese New Year is an important traditional Chinese holiday. 2014 is the year of horse and the first day of the Chinese lunar year happened on last Friday January 30th, 2014. Chinese people normally celebrate the Chinese New year, also called Spring Festival, for 15 days. CMS Chinese class students spent the whole last week learning about Chinese New Year. We talked about the Chinese zodiac, symbolism of fish, dumplings, firecrackers, clementines and more. We also learned the traditions that Chinese people practice during the Chinese New Year: for example, saying lucky phrases to each other and getting red envelope from parents or elders. We also spent time making firecrackers, writing lucky phrases (spring couplet), cutting 3-dimensional character “春”, making paper fish and singing Chinese New Year songs. Students had a lot of fun doing the crafts and decorating the classroom. Through out the week, students not only learned about Chinese culture, they learned the language associated with the Chinese New Year as well.
